We humans are always building, creating, and growing, even when it seems we are standing still, firmly rooted in what we know and understand. We make houses into homes and strangers into loved ones. We turn jobs into careers, careers into memories, and thoughts into reality.
I think the idea that we are always improving ourselves is frequently misunderstood. This is not about changing ourselves to be more palatable to others or fit some expectation of our society.
It’s about improving our relationship to ourselves and shedding the ideas and beliefs that were never ours and often detrimental to us. It’s about understanding ourselves so we can heal and build our lives for who we truly are, instead of who we used to be or who we think we’re supposed to be.
Today’s message is all about what you’re building - making sure to create strong foundations that won’t crumble beneath the weight of life’s challenges. It’s too easy to let fear and desperation make our choices for us, and that’s the kind of building material that ensures you will have to build again.
You may want to jump right in, but hasty decisions will not be helpful here. Make sure you sleep on any big decisions before committing, and think before you speak.
Whatever you may be building, it requires a mix of what you know and what you don’t.
While much of what you know will be helpful, a new perspective and/or new information is important to ensuring that what you are building will last. You may be trying to rebuild something that no longer exists or something that you’ve outgrown, or you may just need a fresh perspective.
You may find that what you have is already wonderful, and just needs a little something new to liven it up so it feels fresh again - kinda like a fresh coat of paint.
The people who you are close to (or would like to be close to) are important here as well. Not only do they offer new perspectives, sometimes we just need to put down our tools for a day and have a little fun to release some of the pressure we’re feeling. They may even want to help you build and bring an element of fun to the work that must be done.
