Each of us has a myriad of masks we wear to fit our situations, environments, and the people we interact with. Masking does not make you inauthentic; it’s simply an aspect of the whole you.
For example, we are ourselves when we go to work, but work gets a slightly different version of us than our family might experience. We mask our pain in public and our insecurities when we meet a potential partner. We put on a brave face when we want to run away, and an angry mask when we are wounded and vulnerable.
There’s another mask that doesn’t seem like it could be you, but it is!
This is the mask that embodies the phrase “fake it till you make it.” It’s what you want and who you wish you could be. Your wants and unmet needs are at the very core of you - a shaky glimpse into the shadows of who you truly are and who you are becoming.
This is the mask we wear to job interviews and first dates. It’s the mask of affirmations, vision boards, and getting back up on the horse that threw you into the dirt. This is your determination and the shedding of beliefs that are no longer helpful or healthy.
I have heard many people scoff at the idea of affirmations, but there is real science behind it! I’ll leave a link below to a Psychology Today article that summarizes a number of studies performed over the years.
Here’s the deal: things like affirmations work because your brain will believe almost anything if it’s repeated often enough.
I have become an expert at screwing with my own head, and you can too! Will you actually become a money magnet if you say it enough times? Maybe not, but maybe so. Affirmations can cause you to change your behavior, become more confident, and try for things you previously might not have thought you could do.
You don’t have to start with what feels impossible or ridiculous. Start with something small and work your way up! Keep visual and physical reminders of your goals, so they stay in the forefront of your mind. This is actually the reason why I started creating my intentional purse charms - I’ll link them below in case you want to check them out!
Make sure to use the phrase “I am” instead of things like “I can, I will, “ or “ I wish I could,” because little words can pack an extraordinary amount of power! It’s also a good idea to create your affirmation as a response to some of the negative self-talk that comes up often, or to pull your energy toward the good things about you that tend to take a back seat to the negative narrative.
I would love for you to leave me a comment telling me something good about yourself! If you can’t quite do that yet, tell me what you want to call in or who you are becoming 💙
