Autumn's Difficulties & Magic: A Message From the Universe

Spiritual & practical guidance for the week ahead :)

This is a period of inspiration, learning, teaching, and collaboration. This is the dawn of a new day when, naked and vulnerable, you are no longer attached to what made you that way. You’ve learned, or are learning, that what made you that way was a part of your journey, not your identity.

This time of year has always been difficult for me, and may be for you as well. It doesn’t have to be as much of a struggle as it tends to be, though!

Not only do I struggle with Seasonal Affective Disorder, my body and my heart remember one of my earliest traumas that occurred at this time - even when my conscious brain forgets. There have been so many years when the end of summer sent me into a deep depression that seemed to have no trigger. Once I realized the source, this time of year got a lot easier for me.

I learned to anticipate the depression so it didn’t catch me off guard, and I can’t even begin to tell you how insanely helpful that was, and still is!

The tears became a passing shower instead of a months-long monsoon. It caused me to be more gentle to myself and opened me up to the beauty of colorful autumn leaves and the crisp breeze on a sunny day, at a time when everything used to be dull and gray. Talk about inspiration!

There also continues to be an energy around purging, and this ties nicely with the rest of the energies I mentioned earlier, even though it may not seem so at first glance.

Decluttering your space, schedule, and mind are ideal activities for this week. Do a brain dump to help you clear your mind, and make a game out of seeing how many items and/or perceived obligations you can get rid of.

Cord-cutting is also advised for those of you who are having a difficult time letting go of people, beliefs, and items that belong in the past.

Every item, person, or thought you drop brings inspiration and excitement to drop more. It may inspire your creative side to do things like redecorate or work out a system to address some of the everyday things you might struggle with. Organizing is a creative endeavor, and so is the visualization of what comes next for you!

It’s also good to remember that, for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, this is a time of preparing for the coming winter.

While society makes us feel like we have to be productive all the time, it is natural and necessary to slow down during the winter, as the rest of the natural world does. Every living thing has its cycle of production and dormancy, and we are not exempt from this cycle.

This is also a time of harvest, celebration, and enjoying the fruits of our labor, even as we stash our nuts for the winter ahead.

It’s a time of community and teaching, or “learning the ropes.” A time to enjoy the sunshine while we can, and get cozy at night. This is a time to figure out how to make things comfy and slow, so we can experience the winter as restful and beneficial, rather than malevolent.

What is your experience with this time of year? Have you been purging and prepping for the winter without even knowing it? What’s your favorite autumn activity, and if you don’t have one, is there something you might like to try? What in your life needs to fall away like the colorful leaves in the tree outside your window?

Use these questions as journal prompts or let me know in the comments! I wish you a happy and gentle season wherever you are 💙
