You may be the type of person who would give someone the shirt right off your back, but keep your heart closed behind walls meant to protect you from heartbreak. It’s also pretty likely that you have a hard time receiving help from others and do all you can to not have to ask for it. You might even be someone who receives a lot and gives little in return.
The dance of reciprocity is an important part of a life well-lived! It’s how we connect to others, and it ensures our survival. While our society glorifies independence and “survival of the fittest,” we know that there is safety in numbers, and that communities build things that individuals cannot.
Anybody who says they created their success all by themselves is forgetting that everything they use and consume was grown or created by someone else’s hand.
There is a persistent image in my head of an Amish barn raising. When a disaster happens, or a new family begins to farm, the whole community pitches in and builds an entire barn in a single day. Nobody gets paid, and nobody is forced to participate. Each person knows that their community will be there for them if and when they need it.
An even better example of this dance is the way many indigenous people’s gifting economy works. Whatever it is that you have or do, you share it with the tribe. You are able to receive what you need, and it’s expected that you give what you are able, when you are able, instead of returning a similar item or service. Your community bonds are your wealth.
Today’s message is asking you to examine the way you dance with the energy of giving and receiving. It assures us that bringing balance to this area will bring a freeing and abundant energy to many different aspects of your life.
Remember, you can also give too much and for the wrong reasons.
Denying yourself what you need - be it resources, love, or respect - isn’t helping the receiver. It’s either showing them that they can keep taking without any kind of reciprocity or respect for boundaries, or teaching them that depleting themselves for the whims of others is what they should be doing.
The latter is particularly important for little eyes who look up to you and depend on you to give them the best chance at a rich and healthy life.
Remember, too, that reciprocating the help that you have received doesn’t necessarily mean you give the same thing back to the same person.
For example, someone who gives you money might benefit far more from a service you can provide. Sometimes it might take the form of “paying it forward” to others in need. Sometimes your story, knowledge, or attention is the most valuable thing another can receive, so if you ever thought you had nothing to give, think again 🩵
