Invisible Wounds, Self-Love, & "No." A Message From the Universe

Spiritual & practical guidance for the week ahead :)

How many times have you shut your mouth when you needed to speak? How often have you made yourself small to avoid rocking the boat? Can you see how you may have continued these behaviors in situations where they were unnecessary? Your body really does keep score. For every feeling stuffed down, every important word unsaid, and every tear you’ve blinked back, there is an invisible wound that festers within.

Modern medicine may be able to treat the symptoms caused by these wounds, but you are the only one who can actually heal them.

If you’ve found your way to me, chances are that you learned how to abandon yourself long before you even knew there was a self to abandon. Some time ago, you learned that shrinking yourself was self-preservation, and the world we live in and the people you’ve surrounded yourself with reinforce this behavior on a regular basis.

Of course, it really was self-preservation at the time, but we’re no longer surviving - we’re learning how to thrive. Noticing these behaviors in yourself is the first and most important step to healing them. Once you take that first step, the rest come somewhat naturally.

You might ask yourself why you just did that or why you feel what you’re feeling in the moment. You may already know the why, but need to be more intentional about how you respond to the thoughts that keep you in survival mode and unhealthy patterns.

This is when “loving yourself” becomes a real possibility instead of some unattainable woo-woo trend.

Self-love doesn’t feel the same way as your love for another might feel - it’s more of a decision you make. It’s a choice to take care of yourself the same way you would take care of someone you love. It’s being patient, kind, and compassionate to yourself, and making healthy decisions when you want to self-sabotage.

You might learn to recognize your body for the amazing machine that it is, instead of allowing our unattainable beauty standards to amplify and distort how you see yourself. It’s learning how to speak up for yourself one “no” at a time, and resting when your body demands it. It’s handing back responsibilities to their rightful owners and nourishing yourself with healthy food and opportunities to create.

This also means not taking “no” as an answer to something you need.

Maybe this means an ultimatum or a search for a doctor who takes you seriously. It could be something you deny yourself because you prioritize everyone and everything else more. It’s recognizing that there will never be time for your needs because you have not deemed them important enough. Sometimes it’s realizing that you will never be ready to do the important thing.

The best things in life come because you took a risk and did the thing despite the fact that you were terrified.

Start small, one step and one breath at a time. Saying “no” to the little things will help you to build up the big ones, and remember, falling and failing are an important part of anything worth pursuing. Dust yourself off and get back up on that horse or wagon or whatever - the road ahead isn’t just a path to a destination; it’s where life is actually lived, experienced, and loved 🩵
