You’re too fat, too thin, your skin color is a problem, as is your face when it’s not properly made up. Standing up for yourself is “rocking the boat,” taking care of yourself is lazy, and setting boundaries is rude.
Happiness is not a destination, and not just an emotion; it’s a way of life.
It’s a choice you make from moment to moment, and the result of unbecoming all the things that other people said you should be. You will never be enough in a society that always wants more, and the sooner you realize that, the sooner you can go about healing the wounds left by those unrealistic expectations.
The way we work and play, the way we love and give and receive, the dreams we put away, and the way we treat others as well as ourselves - our expectations of what we think these things look like are unhealthy and unsustainable.
Our media tells us we should hate our bodies, and our work takes precedence over our health and families. Creating, having fun, and giving ourselves time to rest become so low on our priority list that they could be written with invisible ink.
One of my favorite lies is the narrative that makes us think there’s one person out there who can somehow be everything to us. That’s an awful lot of pressure for that person, and a lifetime of disappointment for you. We need our friends, family, and neighbors.
Consider a new mother with just her partner to “help” versus the new mother who is surrounded by women who have been where she is now. We were not meant to find one person and disappear. We are meant to be part of a community where we all support one another and celebrate the good things in life together.
I know that’s a lot to unpack, but that unpacking is what leads to true fulfillment, and it all starts with looking into those dark corners of your mind and heart.
Once you begin to pull back the curtain of your own thoughts and beliefs, you realize that what resides in that darkness isn’t scary at all - it was the darkness you were scared of. There are beautiful pieces of you in that dark and dusty corner that are buried beneath the shame that was never truly yours.
When people talk about loving yourself, this is how it begins, and it’s how you can extend that love to others in a way that is nourishing instead of depleting.
When all is said and done, love for yourself and your fellow humans, and gratitude for even the smallest of blessings in your everyday life are the key ingredients for the recipe of a happy life. As with most things in life, getting started is the hardest part, and it gets easier with practice.
Take some time this week to break out your journal and explore some of those dark corners.
What are some things you don’t like about yourself? Are they really things you don’t like, or are they things that others don’t like? What’s the worst that can happen if you feed them? What’s the best that can happen if you nourish them?
Everything has its positives and negatives, so it’s ok if you find a piece that you don’t like - acknowledging its existence allows you to accept it and learn to work with or around it.
Maybe you hate your body because it doesn’t look like you think it should, but oh! What an amazing machine it is! Are you actually lazy, or are you not giving yourself what you need? Do you really suck at the thing, or do you just need to give yourself the chance to learn and practice?
Maybe you regret some shitty actions or behavior from the past. That’s a good sign that you’re creating a new way of living that doesn’t include that behavior.
You’re not the person you keep telling yourself you are, so it’s time to shine a light on the real you - the ever-changing you that is delightfully human with your own unique brand of flawed fabulosity!
