This week’s Message From the Universe suggests that inspirational and innovative energy is yours for the taking, but urges you to bring a little more quiet time with it. I honestly feel like this message is calling me out as well!
Tis the season when businesses and creators of all kinds are putting in a little extra time to meet those ultra-commercialistic holiday demands. While big business is in a push to make more than they did last year, many of us are out here just trying to make ends meet. We can despise the late-stage capitalist treadmill all we want, but our very existence demands that we participate in this ridiculousness.
However, we can choose to dance a little differently around or even within this system, and the biggest way to do this is to prioritize your peace the same way you prioritize your responsibilities.
I know that can seem impossible when your responsibilities consume so much of your time and energy, but making the decision to do so opens up windows of opportunity that you couldn’t see when you were so focused on everyone else - you just have to get started. Establish your space and defend it like a rabid beast!
Bringing it back to the holidays, stop worrying about how many presents will be under the tree or how many people you need to buy for. Your kids will be excited for one day while they’re ripping open a bunch of presents, but how many of those presents will be old news in just a few days? All those other people you feel you need to buy for? Chances are they are overwhelmed with the same things you are.
How about we create new traditions this year?
Instead of a metric ton of presents under the tree, get one really nice one, then a few staples like books, creative projects, pajamas, etc. Instead of trying to find the perfect gifts for all the adults in your life, consider doing something like a Secret Santa or making plates of cookies for them.
Cooking and hosting holiday dinners? Consider doing something like a potluck or asking for help instead of trying to do everything yourself. Forget about asking the people you always ask who give you a hard time about it, and ask friends or close family. It might also help to put your foot down with those in your immediate family.
Don’t just ask them to help - be decisive and tell them what their job is for the day. I know I said to forget about asking them, but sometimes changing your approach can make a big difference!
If you’re dreading the thought of all of this because it’s just not the same since you lost someone important to you, create a new tradition that honors them, and be determined to also honor them with laughter and by bolstering the relationships of those who are still here.
Celebrate life and love, even as you mourn your loss, because two things can be true at the same time. Being able to do so helps greatly with the grieving process.
Overall, if it’s stressing you out, ask yourself if there’s a simpler alternative. That thing you always do, holidays or every day, are you doing it because that’s what’s expected of you, what you expect of yourself, or what you’ve always done? Maybe you’re even doing something that lights you up; we need breaks from the good stuff as well!
Of course, you may have no choice but to push yourself for a short time; make sure you plan for a nice recoup! However, it’s one thing to have to push through for something, but if you feel like you’re always pushing through, it’s time to do a little re-evaluating and intentionally seek out those pockets of peace.
The systems we live under are strengthened by our willingness to work ourselves sick. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: you will never be enough in a system that always wants more.
The next time you feel like you’re not enough in some way, ask yourself why, and keep asking! Ask yourself if it’s even natural to be expected to be and do more and more and more! Now think about that person you think is all the things you’re trying to be - do you really think they are all those things? Do you not think they’re struggling to hold those expectations up just the same as you?
